NATIONAL DAY GLORY AFTER LATE SURGE FROM HWANG & PARK  

 

DECEMBER 7TH 2011, ABU DHABI GOLF CLUB, ABU DHABI, (UAE) On 2nd & 3rd December 2011 Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Abu Dhabi Golf Club, in conjunction with the Abdulla Al Masaood & Sons Group and The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf & Spa Resort, hosted the National Day Open in celebration of the forty year anniversary of the unification of the seven emirates. The National Day Tournament at Abu Dhabi Golf Club has been running since 2001; however this was the first time that the event had been staged over two days and over two golf courses as an open event.  

The first round took place at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club on the Friday with 32 teams battling it out to take the title. In excellent scoring conditions it was the teams of Chris Elms & Ron Littleton and Larry & Elinor Laczko that tied for the lead at the halfway stage with excellent scores of 42 points in the pair’s betterball format.   

However there was to be a sudden change in events during the second round at Abu Dhabi Golf Club as both Elms & Littleton and Larry & Elinor Laczko couldn’t match their round one scores and dropped out of the top three placing’s with scores of 37 and 34 points respectively.  

Overall third place went to the team of John Hunt and Michael Welch with excellent scores of 38 and 42 for a combined total of 80 points. The team of Faris Al Azzawi & Hany Abdelnour produced consistent scores of 40 & 41 points for an overall team score of 81 points to take second place outright. However it was the team of Sung Jin Hwang & Seong Dong Park that were the biggest movers of the day. After an opening score of 39 points Hwang & Park were lying tied seventh after round one, but with an incredible score of 44 points and low score of the day on the famous Abu Dhabi National Course Hwang & Park accumulated a team score of 83 points to take victory by two points.
